About The Smashing Pumpkins

Career highlights

The Smashing Pumpkins first took over the rock scene in the 1990’s, and were originally based out of Chicago, Illinois. Bandleader, vocalist, and guitarist Billy Corgan began working with fellow guitarist James Iha in 1988, then recruited bassist D’arcy Wretzky and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain to complete the lineup to release their first album in 1991 titled “Gish.” The album was a success and was released at the perfect time.

Nirvana came into the scene the following year and really spearheaded the 90’s alternative rock genre, paving the path for The Smashing Pumpkins to release their second album produced by Virgin Records in 1993 titled “Siamese Dream.” In 1995 they released a 2 disk album titled “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.” Unfortunately, the band lost their touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin to a fatal heroin overdose in the summer of 1996. Following that, Jimmy Chamberlain was busted by the police for drug possession, and the band replaced him with a new drummer. They have been an active band since 2006, yet very recently announced the Shiny and Oh So Bright tour with James Iha, to join original members Jimmy Chamberlin, Billy Corgan, and Jeff Schroeder.

The Smashing Pumpkins have won 1 American Music Award, 2 Grammy Awards, and 2 MTV Video Music Awards.
