About The Who

Career highlights

The Who is a British rock band who came on the music scene in 1964. This was a tumultuous time in music history, and The Who followed suit with large and loud concerts in true rock band style. They are touted as one of the most influential rock bands of all time, selling over 100 million records worldwide during their career. Their first single, “I Can’t Explain” hit the UK top ten charts while their first US hit came in 1967 with “I Can See for Miles.”

Over the years The Who became a household name in the US and in the United Kingdom. They released several more albums and singles, and continued to tour to different festivals. They semi-retired from live shows in 1976 and released the film adaption of “Quadrophenia” and a documentary entitled, “The Kids are Alright.” The band disbanded in 1983.

The Who continued to tour together on a special occasion basis until 1985. They had an anniversary tour in 1989 and a tour of Quadrophenia in 1996 and 1997. They began regular touring in 1999, and have continued to tour with limited band members and new touring players from 2002 to 2017. Their 2019 tour begins this fall with a full symphony.
